Chess Club – In the Spotlight
The
chess club has been in the national spotlight – holding the finals of the 2011
New Zealand Inter-School Chess Championship.
160 of
the country’s top junior players fought it out at Mt Maunganui College over two
days, watched by their nervous teachers and parents.
The RSA
generously funded books for the school libraries of the winning teams, and made
trestles and other tables available.
The
competition was opened by Tauranga City Councillor Terry Molloy and RSA
General
Manager Peter Moss took the stage at the end to present medals and books to the
winners and place-getters.
The
three New Zealand titles went to Auckland Grammar (Secondary), Takapuna Normal
(Intermediate) and Pigeon Mountain (Primary), all from Auckland.
The
national finals were a reality check for the Bay of Plenty qualifiers –
Bethlehem College, Tauranga Intermediate and Omanu Primary.
They
found the going tough, but Bethlehem did have the satisfaction of scoring a rare
victory against Auckland Grammar when Ray Qian beat their number one, Hans Gao.
Meanwhile, within the chess club the Championship qualifying tournament
continues on Monday nights.
With
four and a half out of five top seeds Bob Smith and Noel Pinic have already
booked their places in the final with two rounds to go.
Viv
Smith (3.5) is alone in third place, while Bert van der Lee, Drew Chadwick and
Richard Tax are all on three points.
