On Sunday 19th of May the Mount RSA
hosted the 72nd Commemoration Memorial Service, of the Battle of
Crete, which took place in May 1941.
Master of Ceremonies for the Event was
Lieutenant Colonel Warren Banks, 6th Hauraki Regiment.
Historian Paul London who is the Vice
president of the NZ Battle of Crete Association welcomed Veterans, Members and
Guests to the occasion.
The Officiating Chaplin Pastor Ross Horton
held a Sermon, and delivered the Benediction.
Guest Speaker was CEO of the Royal New
Zealand RSA Dr Stephen Clarke.
The Ode ‘to the fallen’ was delivered by Mt
RSA President Mr Paul Franks.
The NZBOC Wreath was laid by Mr London with
the assistance of Crete Veterans: Sgt Alan Robinson 6th Fwd. Ambulance,
Sgt Roy Tucker 20th Battalion Division
Signals, Driver Skin Wilson 24th Battalion Div. Ammo, Chief Petty Officer Owen
Richards RNZN, L.Cpl. Malcolm Coglan 19th Battalion.
Cadets from 16 Squadron Air training Corps,
T.S. Chatham Sea Cadet Unit and Western Bay of Plenty Cadet unit, were in
attendance with their Officers.
Band Members from the Tauranga Brass Brand
Incorporated performed magnificently during the Service.
Bugler Peter Cranson played the ’Last Post
& Reveille’.
Following the Service, Dancers from the
Athena Greek Dance Group which included young Children, delightfully
entertained everybody.
Refreshments were then served by the Mt
Maunganui RSA Women’s Section.
